An alternative is to sell your broken laptop rather than just putting it at the back of a cupboard. Sell it on to someone who can use it and use the money yourself towards getting a new one.

Just remember to remove the hard disk if your computer is so far gone that you can't even get into it to erase your data. If you can clean up the hard disk you'll probably get more money for it when you sell.
